2 Point Perspective…

Year 4 – You know all about this! Try teaching your siblings.

Once you’ve got the hang of perspective you can start doing so really awesome drawings. Start by practising drawing 3D cubes and slowly build up your skills until you feel ready to draw a cityscape.

Year 4 have learnt the basics of 2 point perspective and you can too. For this, it would be helpful to have a ruler or something with a flat edge to draw stright lines with.

Horizontal means across, vertical means up/down and parallel lines go the same direction but can never meet.

Draw a straight horizontal line across the centre of your page, this line is your ‘eye level’ – everything above this line you have to look up to see, everything below you have to look down, anything on the line is level with your view.

Place a dot at each end. These dots are your ‘vanishing points’

All vertical lines are parallel to each other.

All diagonal  lines are parallel to other diagonal lines pointing the same direction. Eg – any diagonal line that goes towards the right hand vanishing point will be parallel with all other diagonal lines going the same way.

Start by drawing a vertical line. Join both the top and the botton of the line to each vanishing point. Do this faintly or use a yellow pencil if you have one. These lines are just your guidelines, you won’t want them in your final picture.

Decide where the edge of your shape will be. Draw in the vertical lines -remember they must be parallel to the first line you drew.

Join the top of your LEFT hand vertical line to the RIGHT hand vanishing point.

Join your RIGHT hand vertical line to your LEFT hand vanishing point.

Your 3D shape should now become clear.

Practise drawing cubes at different places. Look how the view of your shape changes. You can never see more than 3 sides of a cube at once.

Once you’ve got the hang of this, try turning your shapes in buildings, as long as you always follow the rules about which direction the lines must go, it should look great.

Try stacking shapes, try diffrent shapes, try putting shapes behind/in front of each other.

When you are ready to draw a city, you can do anything you want! Furturistic, space, fantasy, underwater, olden days castles, your own version of London, anything you want!

Don’t forget to send me your pictures.

Year 4 – remember this from the white board?
